wedding invitation from a crafty couple

Friday, May 29th, 2009

We received this in the mail the other day and it made me smile. Our friends Maegen and Mike, who have two bunnies, designed these invitations themselves and had them printed. It is quite possibly the best wedding invitation we have ever received!  I had to share it. (It scanned a little pinker than it is, it’s actually on a nice kraft cardstock)

The response card is like a cute post card. I don’t want to send it back to them!

ruffles

Oh, the ruffly peony! I seem to be very into blossoms this week especially of the ‘p’ variety. I picked up a bunch of peonies at the farmers market and have been mesmerized by their loveliness ever since.

poppies are popping

poppy-close-up

The poppies are up all over town. Ruffly and red (or in this case a lovely salmon) with velvety, frilly centers like ladies who wear too much blush and black feather boas. They capture your attention as you drive or walk by, well, at least they do mine. I find them a bit mysterious as if each has a story to tell.

In love with bla bla

blabla

I am in love with blabla.

Maybe it’s just fun to say. It makes me smile.

I discovered a whole world of things while looking at their web sight.

Blabla seem like a happy family of workers that produce colorful, whimsical, super soft products composed of natural fibers handmade in Peru.

A beautiful sunny morning here in Portland. We headed to the Bakery Bar so I could share with my husband my new found treasure…the apple bacon scone. Light, flakey, savory and sweet!

Stumptown coffee in the form of a pretty decaf latte and a blueberry scone. One of the many tempting varieties of scones.

Bakery Bar also serves delicious egg sandwiches accompanied with a tasty pepper jam served on black pepper biscuits that melt in your mouth.

Flat Stanley arrives in Portland

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

Before I could show Flat Stanley around town I had to make sure he had the proper attire. He really wanted an Oregon T-shirt as a souvenir so he decided to wear that today and it’s a little chilly so he put on a pair of jeans and a sweater. After our tour of the Nike campus he got a new pair of kicks. Now he’s ready to see the sights. He even has a canvas bag to store any other souvenirs or mementos he finds to take back to New York with him.

Oh no! It’s raining today in Portland. Don’t worry, Flat Stanley! Here’s an umbrella!

Emma, my favorite second grader, sent Flat Stanley to us from New York as part of a class project. He arrived by mail, folded up in an envelope. At first he was more of a white cut-out gingerbread form. It was my job to dress him and now I have to show him around Portland and take some photos to send back to Emma and her second grade class.

I had never heard of Flat Stanley before. Flat Stanley is the title character of a 1964 children’s book by Jeff Brown. A story of a little boy that was flattened by a bulletin board while he slept and he became 1/2″ thick. He wanted to go on a trip, so his family folded him up and mailed him in an envelope to California.

Classrooms use the Flat Stanley project to learn about different communities in the world. What a fun idea!

Country house style and a dream

Monday, May 18th, 2009

Flipping through the June issue of Elle Decor I came across these photos which all happen to come from houses in upstate NY. That of course made me a little homesick (just a tiny bit!). I’ve always dreamed of having a little country house with rustic style and lots of land. I’ll tuck these ideas away and for now just daydream.

I imagine bringing in fresh cut flowers from my garden and preparing them for beautiful  arrangements. I would be wearing a flowy white dress and would leave my wide brimmed straw sun hat by the door.

What can we read or make today?

I asked my husband if he would please build this for me one day. A cozy niche in a field of wildflowers overlooking the castkills. Seems perfect.
