Before I could show Flat Stanley around town I had to make sure he had the proper attire. He really wanted an Oregon T-shirt as a souvenir so he decided to wear that today and it’s a little chilly so he put on a pair of jeans and a sweater. After our tour of the Nike campus he got a new pair of kicks. Now he’s ready to see the sights. He even has a canvas bag to store any other souvenirs or mementos he finds to take back to New York with him.

Oh no! It’s raining today in Portland. Don’t worry, Flat Stanley! Here’s an umbrella!

Emma, my favorite second grader, sent Flat Stanley to us from New York as part of a class project. He arrived by mail, folded up in an envelope. At first he was more of a white cut-out gingerbread form. It was my job to dress him and now I have to show him around Portland and take some photos to send back to Emma and her second grade class.

I had never heard of Flat Stanley before. Flat Stanley is the title character of a 1964 children’s book by Jeff Brown. A story of a little boy that was flattened by a bulletin board while he slept and he became 1/2″ thick. He wanted to go on a trip, so his family folded him up and mailed him in an envelope to California.
Classrooms use the Flat Stanley project to learn about different communities in the world. What a fun idea!
