Hola Tulum!

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Today we travel to Tulum, Mexico. Ahhh, the Mayan Riviera.

I can’t wait to see sparkling blue waters and feel the warm sand beneath my toes!

We are splitting up our trip, staying first at Azulik

Azulik has no electricity, so it is kind of like glorified camping (glamping, as I’ve heard some say!) This will be our second time staying there.

Then we are off to Mezzanine, which is a hip boutiquish hotel a short ways from Azulik. Although we have never stayed there before, we have eaten at their restaurant and they make a mean fish taco. I’m looking forward to that!

I’m sure I’ll have a lot to share when we get back!

Mama needs a brand new bag!

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

We are heading to Mexico for a little fun in the sun.  I needed a bag that I could take from the beach to the town. Something that would resist the sand and water but would also be nice to look at. So I thought I would make one!

The fabrics:

A bright orange floral pattern oil cloth, orange rip stop nylon with a nice honeycomb pattern for the lining, and a black and white dot print that I thought would make an interesting accent pocket.

The pieces are ready to be sewn together…

Just need to push the lining inside the bag.

Cute pocket!

The final step is to topstitch all the way around on the ol’ singer.

Voila…a new bag!

Balls!

I needed something to put my tennis balls in…

I had an idea…

I bought an already made canvas bag in turquoise and added some big gold sparkly iron-on letters. Balls.  Hee hee.  It makes me giggle like a 6th grader every time I see it.  Maybe I should just use it as my everyday bag!

Deluxe Dogs

Monday, January 26th, 2009

Had a bit of a hot dog craving.

Not just a hot dog hot dog, but a ‘if I’m going to have a hot dog I’m taking it all the way hot dog!’

This is a recipe I found in Food & Wine from the June 2008 issue.

Crosshatch Hot Dogs on Grilled Croissants

dsc00210 dsc002093

Mix 2 tbsp. of unsalted butter, softened and 2 tbsp. of Dijon mustard together and gently spread on cut sides of 4 croissants that have been split but still attached on one side.

Get your grill ready. Thread each of the 4 hot dogs onto a thick metal or wooden skewer. With a small, sharp knife, make cuts at an angle in 3 rows down each hot dog, about 1/2 inch apart, cutting partway into the hot dog. The cuts should look like rounded half circles.

On a large plate mix together 2 tbsp. ketchup, 1 tbsp. soy sauce, 1/2 tsp. vegetable oil and  1 large clove of garlic, minced. Turn to coat each hot dog in the mixture.

Grill the croissants over high heat, cut side down, until toasted, about 30 seconds. Turn and grill the other side for about 10 seconds.  Grill the hot dogs over high heat all over, until nicely charred and the cuts open up; the hot dogs will look a little like pine cones. Serve on the croissants. Don’t count the calories on these puppies! Yum!

An adventure in needle felting…

Start with some wool roving.

A felting needle and some foam assist in making the shape.

 Feeling Patriotic….

Tuesday night’s dinner was set in front of the television to watch the Obama inaugural speech.

Yes, they have tails!

I love when imagination meets your feet.

These are one of 50 pairs that contain special props from the actual movie and  have glow-in-the-dark soles!

Did I mention the hand stitched details and the light blue with white stars satin lining?

Unfortunately, these aren’t in my size because I wasn’t one of the ‘awesome, elite, super cool’ to receive them…I just happen to live with one of those people.   So, if I really want a pair of my own and if you do to (without the tails and special props of course) we’ll have to see the movie Coraline when it comes out on Feb. 6th and then visit coraline.com. (HINT: Stay until after the credits!)

Check out them pearly whites!  Weezie went to the Dr. today and was told she has to brush a little more often…  Could be a problem with no thumbs!
