ribbons on the sparkly tree

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Ribbons. Pink. Nature. Something fun for Clementine’s first Christmas. That’s what my husband said when I asked him for some ideas for this year’s tree.

I can do that!

I didn’t want to go out and buy a bunch of stuff so I searched through the ‘magic closet’ of craft supplies and found tulle, wraphia, beads, and a sheer ribbon with flocked sparkly star-like shapes all in the same color of pinky purple. Perfect for garland! I also used this twinkling, fluffy wire I had from last year and wrapped that around the tree in a sort of twisty doodly fashion. The icy looking pink fruit-loop/life savor garland is a vintage find from a yard sale long ago. I happened to have a bunch of nests (I told you it was a magic closet!) that I made sparkly with some glitter. Snowflakes, sparkly animals and pinecones, icicles, and glittery pink balls completed the look. I draped white felt covered with sparkly white tulle around the bottom that glistens with the lights like snow in the moonlight!

Setting the table with sunshine

easter-table-setting-1

We set the sunshine at our table this rainy easter. Here are a few shots from our brunch.

One bunch each of yellow ranunculus, tulips, freesia, and two different varieties of daffodils were the basis for the centerpiece that I made. Two calla lilies and billy’s balls added a little interest and the black grass gave it that final pow! I can plant the grass in my windowboxes after the arrangement is gone.

Poached eggs with parmesan and pesto with the traditional ham was our feast. This egg recipe is soooo good. I will share it later in the week. You definitely should try it!

Rice Krispie Carrots!

rice-krispie-carrots

Why not make your rice krispie treats shaped like carrots this easter? It’s easy to do!

marshmallows-and-rice-krispies

4 cups of mini marshmallows &

6 cups of rice krispies

melt-the-butter

Melt 3-4 tbsp. butter in pot on low heat.

add-marshmallos

Add marshmallows.

melted-marshmallow

Stir until smooth and melted.

add-rice-krispies

Add rice krispies.

mix-it-up

Mix until combined and sticky.

form-into-carrot-shape

Butter your hands (grease ‘em up to keep from sticking!) Scoop up some rice krispie & marshmallow and form into the shape of a carrot. Use wax paper and roll the form to assist in shaping. Press firmly so carrots stay together.

let-them-all-sit-while-you-work

Let them sit on wax paper as you make all of your carrots!

If you wanted to be really ambitious and impress your friends you could melt some chocolate and dip the ends of these carrots in and top with sprinkles for a little color. Then let sit until chocolate firms.

wrap-in-wax-paper1

I wrapped the carrot in wax paper first because the cellophane I used isn’t food safe. Fold up the tip and roll.

twist-the-top

Twist the top.

wrap-in-orange-cellophane

Wrap in orange cellophane.

You can find it at craft stores or wherever they sell easter basket stuff.

same-technique-on-bottom

Use the same technique on the tip by folding the paper up and rolling.

As you roll and the cellophane becomes layered it will appear more orange.

twist-the-top-and-tie-with-raffia

Twist the top and tie with raffia.

You may have to use a small piece of clear tape to secure cellophane towards the bottom.

trim-off-excess

Trim off the top.

cut-strips-of-crepe-paper

Cut strips of bright green crepe paper.

Tissue paper will work too.

pinch-in-center

Pinch strips in center.

tie-on-crepe-paper-greens

Tie the “greens” on the carrot using the raffia.

You may want to do this on both the front and the back of the carrot for a fuller top.

Easter table decor. Inspiration? The carrot.

orange-easter-table

Easter is my favorite holiday, a celebration of springtime. Plus, I love any excuse to pick a theme and decorate. It gives me a chance to drag out some of those things I’ve collected along the way and put them to good use! Departing from the typical pastels that so many choose, last year’s theme for us was inspired by the carrot. A bright orange tablecloth (which is actually just a piece of duck canvas from the local fabric store) is topped with a white polka dot ‘runner’ (also just fabric) with whatever orange accented glassware I could find.

White hardboiled eggs look so simple and clean on the table accented by bright blue ‘robin’s eggs’. Later, we dyed those same eggs.

A ruffly orange ranunculus plant served as our centerpiece and yes, there are a few carrots in there.

Silly carrot “eggs” on each plate filled with treats. Just trying to keep it fun!

Hanging above our head? Carrots tied to the cord of our light fixture of course!

This year’s theme will be yellow and black. You’ll have to wait a week to see that. What will your table inspiration be?

peepin’ in the grass

peeps-in-the-grass

Maybe I’m a little peep obsessed right now, but here is another idea involving those sugary little bunnies.

Skewer your bunnies (I know, sounds a little mean) and then place in a bowl of cat grass. This makes a cute and simple centerpiece arrangement for your Easter gathering!

A bouquet for all my peeps

yellow-peeps

I used to love peeps when I was little. They were my favorite thing in the easter basket. I would open the package immediately, eat one (or three or five) fresh and then leave the rest to get stale because I  liked them a little chewier. They never really lasted that long though. Oh, my teeth cringe at the thought of it now!

To me, peeps symbolize this happy childhood springtime. So, why not a peep bouquet?

Unroll candy grass and cut in the center. Put both sides together and hold in one hand. With the other hand, insert your bunny skewers into the grass. I faced them all out smiling at the recipient.

peep-bouquet1Wrap up with tissue paper, just like a flower bouquet, and tie with a big raffia bow.

Same concept goes for the blue bird peeps except leave the candy grass rolled up in “nest” and insert your birds into it. Tie together and wrap up.

cookies

Corned beef and cabbage with home made brown soda bread, Irish butter and even some Blarney Cheese followed by butter cookies with coarse green sugar was on the menu last night at our house.

The brown soda bread was amazing and so easy, I think I might make it more often. The top gets so crusty and the inside stayed moist and full of hearty whole wheat. It tasted great served warm with some salted Irish butter. Mmmmmmm, all this talk about it, I may have to go have a slice for breakfast.

The cookies were just a simple butter cookie recipe that you roll into a log, chill, and slice and bake. I melted some dark mint chocolate and drizzled it on top, just to finish on a sweet note.
