two weeks to plan a woodland-themed first birthday party

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Two weeks. So much to do. So little time.

I am one of those over-achiever party throwers with grandiose expectations. It is a curse: neurotic, stressful, too-long-of-a-list-of things-to-make-and-do party planning. Well, until everything turns out great and comes together perfectly (or almost perfectly), then it’s a blessing.

The thing that really gets me is that I will spend all of this time and energy on what I hope to be an amazing, hopefully unforgettable, first birthday party for my sweet little miss and the fact is, she won’t remember it at all. We’ll have the photos, I guess. We can tell her how great it was and how much she liked it.

Where to start? Pick a theme. Easy. That I chose many months ago when I saw a certain woodland critter paper. I knew right then that Clementine’s first birthday would have a woodland theme: critters, trees, and of course red and white polka-dot mushrooms. I’ve always had a thing for polka-dots. Not too frilly or girly girly, just cutesy enough.

Next, google. I had no idea that woodland themed parties were so popular. I was able to get some inspiration from some other like-minded party throwers. Here’s what I found:

Wow. Some of the ideas I already had, it was nice to see them executed, others I found inspiring. Now I feel slightly more overwhelmed. Thank you to these lovely blogs: charlotte’s fancy , handmade…cathy gaubert, a little sussy, kate landers events, my sweet and saucy, and stephmodo.

I will be working on my many lists this weekend. Woodland first birthday party…to be continued….

off to the farmer’s market in a paper frock

farmers-market-dress

While I was home for a visit, I wandered into Paper Trail in Rhinebeck. They had so many great things!  I especially loved their current exhibition of amazing paper craftery. This dress is created entirely of seed catalog pages and packets which are artfully cut and folded by Linda Filley (Referred to on their site as a paper couturier… what a great title!) to create flowers and vegetables for this “Farmer’s Market Girl” frock.

Check out “raincoat” and “bluebird”. Both are equally inspiring as was the rest of the work on display in Texture con Texture.

Picture was taken from Paper Trail website.

candeleir

Oh yes, those are gummi bears!

I didn’t make it. I didn’t even think of it.

A candeleir.

5,000 hand strung acrylic gummi bears.

My love of colorful things in mass quantities and

my appreciation for the work that goes into a project like this

has made me speechless.

Terrarium Cake

terrarium-cake

Straight from the CIA a piece of cake in the form of a terrarium. Those culinary students! I have never seen anything like this! Everything is edible, including the micro greens used on top. This was more of a personalized size but imagine a full aquarium size for a party?

A gourdwalk in the garden

gourdwalk

I found this in a magazine at some point. I thought it was such a great idea for growing gourds. You know how those vines get so long and can take over a garden that is cramped for space so why not let them grow up and over an arbor of some sort. Imagine walking through at the end of the summer with birdhouse gourds and mini pumpkins popping through the vines. If only I had a bit more yard to work with than a box for my tomatoes to grow in. One day!
